Short cycling can occur when the AC is too large for the home, the thermostat is not reading correctly, airflow is restricted, or another issue interrupts the cooling cycle. If the unit keeps starting and stopping in short bursts, it may need AC repair before the extra cycling puts more strain on the equipment.

2. Airflow Is Restricted

Your AC needs steady airflow to cool and dehumidify your home. When air cannot move properly across the evaporator coil, the unit may struggle to remove heat and moisture from the air.

Restricted airflow may be caused by:

  • The air filter is dirty
  • Supply and return vents are open
  • The thermostat fan is set to “auto”

  • Water is collecting near the indoor unit
  • The AC runs in short bursts instead of longer cooling cycles

The thermostat fan setting is especially important. When the fan is set to “on,” it continues blowing air even when the AC is not actively cooling. That can push moisture from the coil back into the home. For humidity control, “auto” is usually the better setting because the fan stops between cooling cycles, giving moisture time to drain away.

Short cycling, poor airflow, dirty coils, ductwork problems, or a slow condensate drain can all keep your AC from removing moisture properly.
