Average Life Expectancy of HVAC Units

How long your HVAC unit lasts depends largely on its type. You can maximize how long your device lasts by moderating its usage and scheduling regular maintenance.

Central air conditioners last between ten years and fifteen years, and ductless mini splits have an excellent life expectancy of about twenty years. Furnaces have an average life expectancy of between 15 and 20 years while heat pumps typically last about 15 years.

Other Signs Your Device Needs Replacement

When should I replace my HVAC unit? The biggest sign is when the unit reaches the end of its life expectancy. You’ll also know you need a new device if you notice any of the following signs.

Frequent Repairs

Do you find yourself paying for extensive ac repairs? You’ll save money in the long term by upgrading to a new unit. As devices age, they require more frequent and expensive repairs.

You can determine if a new device is a good value by multiplying the cost of the repair by the age of the device. If the total equals at least $5,000, you can consider a new furnace or air conditioner a smart investment.

Old Refrigerant

Old models use the outdated R-22 refrigerant, also known as freon. If your air conditioner leaks freon, you won’t have access to R-22 and can’t refill it.

Newer models use R-410A refrigerant. It runs more efficiently, doesn’t release ozone-depleting chemicals, isn’t flammable or toxic, and has a longer life expectancy.

Rising Utility Bills

HVAC units have a significant drop in energy efficiency as they reach the end of their life expectancy. If you notice your energy bills rising disproportionately to how often you use your device, you need an upgrade.

Poor Air Quality

Your device ages cool or heat the air as well as it ages. You’ll notice uneven temperatures throughout your home or air that doesn’t reach the temperature set on your thermostat.

Unusual Smells and Noises

One major sign you need a new device is if you notice weird noises or smells coming from your device. This includes the sound of banging, clanking, or grinding. You should feel concerned if you smell burning, mold, or decomposition.

Abnormal Operation

If your device runs constantly, turns on and off quickly, or doesn’t turn on at all, you may have a power issue or some other major problem.

AC failed after hurricane Helene . Technician Aaron Pitts came out and arrived much earlier tgan the dispatcher predicted. He called from the job he was at gave me his estimated arrival and showed up right on time. He quickly diagnosed the issue and explained the required repair process. If I could give them more than 5 stars I would! Our AC stopped working monday night, it soon became 85 degrees inside our home. I’m currently very pregnant (9months, due in 2 weeks) and have a 17 month old toddler at home. Aaron is amazing-he was our first experience with Galbreath and has set the standard high. He came out on an emergency call for no air working in August and quickly got to work identifying the issue. Unfortunately, it was a motor problem so $600 it was repaired, but he did it all in the same day and with a smile on his face and in the rain. We signed up for the yearly maintenance service agreement and someone else came out at the end of August. He seemed to more concerned with finding problems and upselling products that actually servicing the unit. I called to speak with someone about my disappointment and they insisted on sending Aaron back out to do a follow up walk through which I really appreciated. I had different expectations on what the maintenance agreement was which was my fault for not inquiring, however they definitely did right by me. It is refreshing to know that there are still honest companies and hard working employees

Ms. Rebecca was quick to respond to our needs for service and repair for our air conditioning unit. She was able to quickly dispatch a tech to the home. She ensured both myself and my wife received texts messages so we were aware of who our tech was and when he would be arriving. The text included a picture of the tech which was really nice so we knew who to look for and it also included his review rating which again helped put our mind at ease. Our tech Danny, was prompt, polite and educated me the whole way what my options were that included pictures and videos of areas of concern. Priced extremely well.
