Common Furnace Problems in Savannah, GA.

With the winter months upon us, a reliable and efficient furnace is essential to keep warm in the homes of Savannah, GA. However, they do run into the occasional troubles without proper care.  At Galbreath Heating and Air, we are here to help you avoid such troubles with regular maintenance.

Common furnace problems we see faced by homeowners and their solutions:

  • Uneven Heating and Cold Spots
  • Strange Noises or Banging Sounds
  • Frequent Cycling On and Off
  • Pilot Light Issues and Ignition Problems

Uneven Heating and Cold Spots

In Savannah, GA, one of the most common furnace problems we encounter is uneven heating and cooling. This can be due to a variety of reasons, including leaks, restricted air flow, or inadequate installation. At Galbreath Heating and Air, we have some of the best solutions to keep your home ‘evenly’ warm this winter!

  • Adjust the Airflow. We recommend adjusting the airflow of the vents throughout your home to avoid uneven heating and cooling. Partially, but not entirely, close the vents on one level of your home.  This will redirect the air and alleviate pressure build-up in the system.
  • Ensure Proper Installation of Furnace. Occasionally a mid-sized furnace or ductwork will be installed in a home. This can cause several issues, including uneven heating and cooling.
  • Inspect Leaks. It is recommended to have a professional come to your home at least once a year to do a full leak inspection of your heating system.  If there’s a leak, it can cause the air meant for an intended location to leak before it arrives.
  • Add Insulation. Without proper insulation, homeowners cannot get the full benefit of their heating systems.
  • Consider Zoning Systems. Zoning systems are a great way to avoid uneven heating throughout your home.  It allows you to control temperatures independently by floor.
  • Air Filter Replacement. Air filters are responsible for collecting air particles, such as dirt and debris, to keep the air throughout your home clean and ensure your furnace is working correctly.  At Galbreath Heating and Cooling, we recommend replacing your air filter at least once every three months.

Strange Noises or Banging Sounds

If you are hearing rattling or whistling sounds throughout your home, it might be time to schedule a professional inspection. Strange noises are never a good sign. They could indicate issues with the blower motor, loose components, or even a clogged burner.

Here are a few of the noises you may hear because of a faulty system:

  • Scraping Noises. This typically indicates that your blower motor is either broken or loose. If this is left unresolved, it can lead to wear and tear. If you notice this sound, turn off your furnace immediately and call a Galbreath Heating and Air professional!
  • Whistling Noises. Just as scraping noises, whistling noises are often due to issues with the blower motor. This is often due to a lack of airflow in the heating system. To solve this issue, we recommend replacing your air filter.
  • Rattling Sounds. Rattling sounds usually means there is a loose screw on the panel or door. To resolve the problem, tighten the screws. If it continues, this could indicate a loose part. A rattling sound could sometimes mean a crack within the heat exchanger. We recommend turning off your furnace and calling a professional.

Frequent Cycling On and Off

A common furnace trouble that homeowners often overlook is short cycling. Short-cycling is when your furnace turns on and off frequently, so it is not completing its cycle as intended.

Below are several potential causes of this sort of furnace malfunction:

  • Thermostat Issues. The thermostat is the brains behind your heating system. It is in charge of sending signals to your furnace to set the proper temperature. A malfunctioning thermostat could cause short cycling if it is incorrectly reading temperatures.
  • Clogged Filters. A clogged air filter often leads to little airflow throughout your home. This can indirectly cause the furnace to short-cycle due to overheating.
  • Cracked Heat Exchanger. A cracked heat exchanger is one issue that cannot be ignored. Short cycling will occur due to overheating. This could release carbon monoxide throughout your home, putting you and your family in danger.

When your furnace is short-cycling, it is important to seek professional help.  Without proper treatment, it could lead to costly repairs or, sometimes, replacement.

Pilot Light Issues and Ignition Problems

Every single component within your furnace plays an essential role in providing warmth to your home, including the pilot light. The pilot light is responsible for igniting the furnace. So when it’s out, your furnace will not be able to produce heat to keep your home warm.

Every once in a while, it will go out due to drafts or poor ventilation. In some cases, it could result from a faulty thermocouple, a dirty pilot orifice, or gas supply problems.

  • Faulty Thermocouple.  A thermocouple serves as a sensor to measure temperature. It is a combination of a tube, a bracket, and wires. The best way to diagnose a faulty thermocouple is with an open circuit test done by a professional technician.
  • Dirty Pilot Orifice.  If your furnace is facing troubles, it could mean a dirty pilot orifice. When the pilot orifice is filled with dirt and debris, the pilot light won’t be able to light properly.  When it comes to cleaning a pilot orifice, it is recommended to disassemble the pilot and use a needle to clear out debris.
  • Gas Supply Problems. When your pilot light doesn’t activate, it could be due to gas line issues.

We have had a wonderful experience working with Galbreath and every single person from the company we have worked with. We feel well taken care of and confident we made the right decision on our new unit with all the information given. Our family was made comfortable and cool and we are pleased to continue to be customers in the future.
I have had nothing but good experiences with Galbreath. They are prompt, knowledgeable and courteous. That is why I renew my service agreement every year. Call them, you won't be disappointed.
Steven was very respectful and kept us informed of his findings.
Good experience with Galbreath Heating and Air, diagnosed issues and repaired in a timely manner, technician was on time, polite, clean and knowledgeable. James was great.
Gil was on time, took the time to troubleshoot the problem and quickly made the correction. The Galbreath service techs and customer service team are top notch. Not thrilled with the Lennox HVAC system as I’ve had more issues in 5 years than I have had with all other systems (Trane) combined, over the previous 35 years.
All employees are extremely courteous, polite, and patient. Their processes from scheduling, estimates, services, and follow up are very transparent leaving no question your home will have all needs taken care of. Kevin completed my last service and was awesome
Steven, Kevin and Tyler were knowledgeable, friendly, efficient and trustworthy. We appreciate their professionalism and great service!
Quick help and showed up on the weekend to get our system up and running again
Great experience. Knowledgeable technician.
The tech was friendly and courteous. We have known Gill for many years and have always been very satisfied with his professionalism.

Great service
We received an estimate quickly. Very professional!
Brandon and Steve came to my house to fix my AC problem, and they did. They were very professional , respectful, and friendly. Explained what was happening and what they did to fix it. First time with this company and I am very very satisfied!
Had my regular semi annual visit from Galbreath and Sons today. As usual they were spot on arriving well within my scheduled appointment. Had my unit checked out service and done. I’ve been a Galbreath and Sons customer for many years and never experienced any thing less than excellent service.
James was very professional. He recommended a couple of things and I took his advice. He was very thorough. Thank you Galbreath Heating and Air!
Lucky to find a company this professional!
Brandon was awesome about addressing my concerns and explaining opportunities for my system to improve. I've always found Galbreath technicians to be friendly, prompt, and knowledgeable.
UPDATE: I have changed my 1 star to 4 stars. Since I wrote this review in January 2025, I have come to realize that our problem is not Galbreath but Lennox. Galbreath has given us excellent service fixing this problem every two months. However, the unit we bought is from Lennox and their customer reviews are 91% 1 star. Sadly, the problem continues and our HVAC is once again broken; it’s been exactly two months since the last time it broke.

Do not hire Galbreath Heating and Air! We have had nothing but problems with them. 15 months ago we purchased a $20,000 4 zone unit from them and it has been one problem after another. Every couple of months the unit breaks and we either have no heating or air, or it’s down to one zone. During one of their repairs they admitted that they had never replaced the wiring for the new unit and had left the old. They replaced it, however, that did not fix our issues. This morning I woke up to yet another breakdown and no heating. We are so sick of this problem. Perhaps we need to hire a lawyer and look into the GA lemon laws.
Made a Saturday visit and located problem right away. Technician was professional and friendly. Highly recommend !!
They were on time. Very, knowledgeable of the work. Explained everything. We were able to ask questions and received answers. I've had this service for 20 years. Always neat and clean.
Danny was on time, professional, explained what he was doing and found the problem within 10 minutes on site. Provided excellent service. Top notch company and ask for Danny. He is an excellent technician. Thank you!
As usual...super professional service and customer care. Highest rating!
Had them out weeks later for a repair. Again, super service!
Professional, competent above other competitors I have used.
Kevin Jackson and Aaron Dickerson did a great job servicing my HVAC today. They were kind, courteous, and didn’t waver under the discerning watchful eyes of my supervising dogs. LOL! They explained each step of the process very clearly and thoroughly. I am so pleased I made the switch to Galbreath!
As usual very professional and knowledgeable about equipment, and what’s going on, with solutions to repair or extend use. Communication throughout visit and made sure I understood what was said and needed. Galbreath put my new air unit in over 10 yrs ago and I’ve been with them ever since and into the future. I can’t remember the guy’s name but I will ask for him when I need service. Lifetime customer
Aaron gave outstanding customer service! Thanks, Aaron
My two AC units were over 17 yrs old. Both units stopped working.
After calling several companies to assess the issue, Galbreath was the only vendor that could come out the same day and didn't charge a same day upcharge. The tech asses both of the units and unfortunately, it was time to replace them. I accepted the assessment as I had been bandaiding for a while. Danny, came to the property and did a thorough airflow assessment, provided various options and wasn't pushy. I had 2 other companies that came out before Danny...all in the same day. They looked at the system and immediately started on the sales pitch. Was Galbreath the least expensive? Not at all, but I felt more comfortable with the walk through assessment that Danny performed vs the other two. Would I recommend? Absolutely. Also, customer service is huge to me. I can always reach someone at Galbreath if I have a question. That goes a long way with me.
Galbreath is always professional, on time, and does a great job. I am always pleased with their service and techs.
Service was good, but they annoy me with numerous emails, texts (like this one) and redundant appointment reminders. Less contact would be better.
What a relief to know your company exists and still have world class customer service. Unlike the majority of HVAC companies here in the Savannah, Georgia area, Galbreath Heating & Air are true professionals. During our recent cold snap, my furnace was not working. The very next morning after speaking to Rebecca Mr. Danny Shapiro (HVAC Tech) arrived and had my furnace up & running in no time. I didn’t have to wait two or three months like other companies would claim and was treated as customers should be treated. Mr. Shapiro inspected both furnace & A/C unit as a preventive measure to avoid immediate issues. Due to this awesome experience, I am going to be giving Galbreath all my HVAC business.
Very professional. Service guys are so nice and explain everything well.Galbreath can be proud of their crew.
I recommend this company to everyone, they are the best, the technician are very knowledgeable and professional, especially Brandon Richardson he is very knowledgeable and his suggestions are on points. Thank you Brandon.
Kevin Jackson contacted me prior to arriving for routine maintenance. He is a very professional, friendly technician who obviously loves what he's doing and is very knowledgeable about his trade. His attention to detail is precise and thorough. He explains everything in detail. He is a valuable part of your team. I would highly recommend your company.
James was so professional and friendly! He took time to explain everything and even called in assistance when he wasn’t sure. Even though it was much later than planned it was still such a great experience.
Really liked the tech explaining what he was doing and what it means. He was on time
Excellent Service. I highly recommend Galbreath Heating and Air.
Tyler was very thorough and informed us of all things that needed addressed! I would recommend Tyler to anyone who needs air conditioning service to call Galbreath . .Tyler also set us up to have our air conditioner repaired quickly ! Danny Shapiro came out the next day to address the problems with our air conditioner. Danny explained what was wrong and order the parts to make our air conditioner more efficient plus insulated the pipes and redid the vents and insulation! If you have any air conditioning issues ask for Danny Shapiro from Galbreath heating and Air.!!
I am very impressed with Galbreath heating and air. They give you reminders of their upcoming visit and a picture with a bio of your technician. The technician was very prompt and knowledgeable. He explained everything and even changed out our air filters. I give them an A+++
Came on the weekend. Very polite
